Sharon Van Etten - ”Love More”

There is simply no replacement for carefully constructed, expertly executed musicianship.  In today’s musical landscape, abounding with lo-fi acts — gleefully flaunting defined musical conventions (my guitar is out of tune?) — and rap production — unless your beat is unbelievable, it probably took about 35 minutes to make — musicianship is often viewed as more of a curse than a gift.  It is something to subvert, something to push aside in the quest to make art that is confrontational and/or innovative.  Something to avoid.

The same can be said for restraint.  Glance through my most played list, and you’ll find that out-and-out dance jams and beat-heavy rap songs gather the most hits.  My radio does not exactly teem with subtlety.

But Sharon Van Etten revels in these two qualities — so often overlooked by me and my kind — and produces a piece of music more satisfying, more powerful, and more moving than the most madcap Washed Out remix on the internets. infot

still loving this months later.
